Last Saturday I was invited to Hardy Farm pavilion for a private consultation with West Didsbury and Chorlton FC, along with Councillor Sheila Newman and Councillor Val Stevens. We had a chance to view the revised plans and raise any questions or concerns we had with the club directly. Now that the new plans have been submitted to the Council there is a 14 day consultation period, giving all those who continue to object to them the chance to make their views known. Whilst the site of the all-weather pitch has been moved, parts of the...

Withington Q&A with Andy Burnham
|
On 2nd October I invited members of the constituency who work in the NHS to a Question and Answer Forum with Andy Burnham MP, the Health Secretary. Once again, as with previous events, I was thrilled with the turnout with people for a wide range of professions joining us, from GPs and nurses to students, union workers and hospital board members. This was reflected in the variety of questions that people were keen to raise with Andy; we had frank discussions on topics such as the abolishment of hospital car park charges, access to NHS dentists and the out-sourcing of...

Douglas Alexander visits Chorlton
|
One of the issues I am most passionate about is the global environment and slowing the terrifying rate at which our climate is warming.
Climate change is something that will affect all of us. It is not something we can hide from and hope it goes away; it is something that today is a clear and present danger to our society. Climate change has a disproportionate affect on communities in the third world. The challenge is to make sure they don’t make the same mistakes that we did.
I invited Douglas Alexander to speak in Chorlton yesterday at St...

John Prescott to visit Parrs Wood High School
|
I was delighted when The Environment Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) announced the details of its ‘New Earth Deal’ School Tour last week, naming Parrs Wood High School as one of its stops! As a result, PACE’s Rapporteur on Climate Change, former UK Deputy Prime Minister and Kyoto Protocol negotiator John Prescott, will visit the school during UN Climate Week and deliver a presentation on the need to get a fair deal at Copenhagen as part of his ‘New Earth Deal’ campaign. As a campaigner to raise awareness of...

Resident's Parking Scheme, West Didsbury
|
A new resident’s parking scheme is to be introduced in West Didsbury. This is something that I have been campaigning to introduce for some time now, so I am extremely pleased to see that progress is being made. The proposed scheme will now cover a much bigger area than the pilot scheme first announced last year, covering roads from Creswell Grove and Northern Grove to the former hospital site and from Cavendish Road to Barlow Moor Road. I know some residents and local traders are worried about what the scheme will mean for them and I’d like to take this...

With the mass exodus of students that comes at the end of every academic year, comes the same problem: this mass exodus provides landlords with the opportunity to gut and refurbish their student properties, and consequently residents have to face piles upon piles of rubbish left in the streets of Fallowfield, Withington and Didsbury. After receiving a complaint about stacks of rubbish littering the roadside from a resident of Heyscroft Road last week, I decided to go and check it out myself. Although I have been aware of this problem for some time now, I am disappointed by its...

Press Release from the Labour Party
|
Press Release from Manchester Withington Labour Party For Immediate Release John Leech needs to come clean on tuition fees Lib Dem MP John Leech was today accused by the Labour Party of not knowing his own party’s policy on tuition fees. The Manchester Withington MP appeared to be unaware of his party’s new approach after he put out a leaflet entitled "Real Action to Help Families" on July 30. The claims he put forward on tuition fees in his leaflet were dropped...

Manchester to Liverpool Rail Link
|
It is great news that the Government has announced the electrification of the line between Liverpool and Manchester. This Labour investment in the transport system will improve links between the two biggest cities in the North West as well as boost the economy. Visiting Manchester and Liverpool today the Transport Minister, Sadiq Khan MP said: "This busy line is vital to the region's economy. Electrification will provide quicker, more comfortable journeys for rail passengers and help boost business in these two great cities. "The Government is investing in our railways, boosting the economy and...

On the Ground in Didsbury
|
Last week my campaign team hit the streets of Didsbury to find out about the local issues that were affecting the local people in that area. One of the main issues that was raised was the problem of anti-social behaviour, something that should not have to be tolerated but has become ever increasingly present in our society. I have been in touch with Greater Manchester Police and I have asked them to look at any further measures could be taken in order to eliminate this problem for residents; hopefully it can be solved swiftly...

Labour Delivering for Withington
|
When I was a girl growing up in Withington under a Conservative rule, I felt the pain of many families, crippled by the policies of Margaret Thatcher. Many schools consisted of shacks and it wasn’t uncommon to wait over 18 months for basic healthcare treatment. I care about the area in which I born and I will always stand up and use the influence I have within the Labour Government to deliver for local people. That is why I was delighted to welcome the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, to Christie Hospital last Friday. It was thanks to the...

The behaviour of landlords is an issue that affects particularly Withington and Old Moat ward’s all year round – but at this time of year the problem becomes increasingly acute. As students move out of their term time houses, rubbish tends to be strewn everywhere and it not only creates an eyesore but a serious health and safety issue. If you take a look around streets like Derby Road in Withington you’d be amazed by the thoughtless destruction that has place, with literally large sofas dumped in the middle of the street. The problem relates to...

Recent news that the Christie Hospital charity money held in a failed Icelandic bank will not be refunded by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme came as a real blow. But we will not stop there to get back over £6million of charity money raised by hundreds of people through their fundraising efforts. I'm working with the Christie hospital management and the government to make sure that the money is returned.
Back in the Autumn when the bank collapsed taking the Christie money with, I raised the issue with Alastair Darling and was assured that steps were being taken to...

Three weeks after Didsbury school children delivered a 2,100 strong petition to the Home Office, news has come through that their schoolmate 9-year-old Tony Lola and his mother Mireille, have been granted leave to remain in this country. This is truly great news for the community, Tony’s friends and for South Manchester as a whole. I have been fighting hard for Tony and his mother and have been using my influence with the Labour Government to put Tony’s case directly to Immigration Minister Phil Woolas. When Phil rang me on Monday to tell me that Tony...

We were all shocked by the recent news that Lib Dem Councillor Neil Trafford, for Didsbury West ward, sadly passed away earlier this month. Regardless of political differences we may have had it is incredibly sad that someone so young died in the prime of his life and my thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues....

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the people that visited my website in 2008 and took the time to contact me about local issues. I'm very proud to be the Labour Parliamentary Candidate for the area in which I was born and raised and I am delighted at every opportunity I get to help local people.
It has been a very tough year with the world facing a global credit crisis that has affected every country including our own. However I am very confident that through the strong leadership of the Labour Government and the...
